Alert Issued For Caller Posing As Police Officer In Fairfield County

A fraudster posing as a police lieutenant in Fairfield County tried to pull a fast one on a Darien resident before quickly hanging up once he was found out.

Investigators at the Darien Police Department received a report from a Barringer Road resident on Friday, Nov. 22, who said she had just received a call on her cell phone from someone identifying themselves as “Lt. TJ Whyte.”

The scammer then proceeded to tell the resident that there was a warrant out for her arrest out of the Darien Police Department after she failed to appear in court. When she questioned the validity of the comment, police said that he then hung up immediately.

The complainant stated the call was brief, but the person knew her name and home address. When officers called the number back, a voicemail recording identifying it as the voice mailbox of “Lt. TJ Whyte of the Darien Police Department.”

Investigators were unable to get in touch with the scammer, though the Darien resident suffered no loss, police said. The incident is under investigation.
